Two recreational vehicles at Whalens Grindstone Shores caught fire Nov. 28 due to a drifting ember from an unattended brush fire.
According to Port Austin Fire Chief Don Zimmerman, the fire started by a hot ember being carried over by the wind.
Zimmerman said an excavating company at a nearby property had left a permitted brush fire unattended for a short period of time around noon, when the wind shifted and blew the ember to the nearby property.
"You could see where the grass caught fire," Zimmerman said.
Fortunately the grass fire was spotted by some people driving by, who reported it to central dispatch, Zimmerman said.
According to Zimmerman, the fire destroyed a fifth wheel travel trailer and another travel trailer. There were also reports of an explosion, which Zimmerman believed was liquid propane tanks in the trailers.
