A man was hospitalized Wednesday, Jan. 20, after he escaped a fire at a two-family home in Holland. He was found unconscious in the back yard. The fire was reported about 2 p.m. at 414 Maple Avenue. While Holland firefighters were on the way, they were told that residents in the second-floor apartment were believed to be trapped inside. Firefighters, on scene in four minutes, found fire and heavy smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters were using a ladder to search for trapped victims on the second floor when they found the injured man in the back yard. Believing someone was still trapped, firefighters searched the upper level – finding no one – with fire burning below on the lower level. Firefighters determined that the injured man was the only one in the home.
