Two dogs died as a Portage home was destroyed in a Saturday evening house fire, officials said.
Firefighters responded to reports of smoke around 5 p.m., Sept. 25 to a home near Portage Road and Metsa Court, said the Portage Department of Public Safety.
Two dogs were found inside the home, officials said, and they both died from injuries suffered in the fire. No people were found inside the home, officials said. The home is considered a total loss, officials said. The cause of the fire is under further investigation.
The fire closed down Portage Road from Osterhaut Avenue to Mandigo Avenue for about one hour, said the Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch Authority.
