Car extrication, rappelling from heights and learning self defense were all just a normal day at summer camp for 15 local girls.
A group of Ann Arbor-area girls ages 13 to 17 recently became the first cohort to participate in the “Blaze & Blue Camp” hosted by the Ann Arbor police and fire departments. The free camp held its inaugural session from Monday, June 27, through Thursday, June 30, and was part of a joint effort in the departments to introduce girls to women with first responder careers. The camp was split in two parts, with participants working with firefighters on Monday and Tuesday and with the police department on Wednesday and Thursday.
Mollie Meadow, 13, said working with the female firefighters was a “cool opportunity.”
