VIDEO: Lansing Community College (LCC) announced a new apprenticeship they are offering; the first responder apprenticeship program. The partnership is between the college’s health and human services division, the Lansing fire department, and Capital Area Michigan Works. The program will allow newly trained firefighters to learn the skills of an EMT over a 16 week program. These skills include CPR training, advanced first aid, standard ambulance operations, and other life saving skills. Dr. Will Emerson is in charge of apprenticeships at LCC. He said Michigan is having a shortage of first responders. “So we really need innovative ways to try and meet that need and this is one of the ways you do it,” he said. There are many things that make this apprenticeship unique, one of them being the fact that they have an ambulance in one of their classrooms for students to use.
