PHOTO: Firefighters at Mt. Morris Township Station 1 received a new truck this week to replace an engine destroyed in a crash three weeks ago.
Scott Hillerman, chief of the Mt. Morris Township Fire Department Station 1, said the new Rosenbauer engine was on order when firefighters were involved in a crash with the 1996 Pierce engine on March 20.
Firefighters were responding to a crash on southbound I-75 during a snowstorm early that morning, when another vehicle lost control on slippery roads and hit the fire truck.
The impact sent the fire truck careening into the center median wall, which caused it to overturn. Five firefighters and the other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and made a full recovery.
The fire department planned to retire the 1996 truck and sell it this spring, but it was declared a total loss after the crash.
