The 74-year-old woman who attempted to rescue her wheelchair-bound husband from their burning home in March is still in recovery at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Alta Gaines lost her 75-year-old husband David Gaines, her dog and her belongings in the fire. Alexander County Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Earle said an electrical problem in the house sparked the fire, which resulted in $100,000 in damages to Alta’s home as well as content loss. The fire sent Alta to the hospital with second- and third-degree burns on 27 percent of her body, according to Alexander County Public Information Officer Gary Herman.
