The N.C. State Highway Patrol said no charges will be filed after a tanker truck carrying a corrosive chemical overturned near the Isabel Holmes Bridge in New Hanover County Wednesday afternoon. According to Sgt. Matthew King with the Highway Patrol, the tractor-trailer, operated by Florida Tank Lines, was making a left-turn onto U.S. 421 from the Isabel Holmes Bridge around 3:30 p.m. when the tanker’s cargo shifted, causing the vehicle to overturn onto the southbound shoulder of U.S. 421. King said the tractor-trailer was carrying sodium hydroxide which is classified as a hazardous material. The Haz-Mat Regional Response Team out of Wilmington, along with New Hanover County Fire Rescue and the Wilmington Fire Department, responded to the scene of the accident. King said despite the tanker overturning, it did not rupture, however, some of the chemical did manage to leak out.
