A young Kinston family was displaced Tuesday morning after a fire swept through their house on Harding Avenue.
Thick, gray smoke rolled out of a small, green house at 504 Harding Ave. as Kinston Firefighters arrived on the scene.
Flames were visible, climbing out of the roof a little after 7 a.m. and more flames could be seen in the back room of the one-story structure.
Firefighters quickly entered the structure from the back and front while other firefighters set up ladders to attack the fire from the roof.
Reginald Walker, who lives across the street where the fire started and was standing on his porch watching the firefighters working, said the lights of the fire engines arriving made him aware his neighbor’s house was on fire.
“Do you know if they found anyone inside?” Walker asked. “There were people living over there.”
He said it was a terrible thing to see as the fire flared out of the back of the roof and thick, gray smoke rolled out of the eves and over the roof while firefighters fought it.
“I just hope no one was in there,” Walker said.
