Firefighters were busy at midday Wednesday with two structure fires that began from wood stoves in opposite ends of Wilkes County. One fire was on Gowings Knob Road in the McGrady community of northern Wilkes and the other was on Hunting Creek Road in the Somers community of southeastern Wilkes. Neither fire resulted in injuries. The McGrady, Mulberry-Fairplains and Mountain View fire departments were dispatched at 11:14 to a fire in a small wood frame house on Gowings Knob Road. McGrady Fire Chief Mike Lane said firefighters rapidly knocked the fire down and contained it to one room of the house, owned and occupied by Junior Gwyn.
