PHOTO: An explosion the homeowner believes was started from paint thinners on a skid in the basement rocked a home near Morganton on Wednesday evening. Terry Deal said he was about to fix dinner when he smelled smoke in his house on Pleasant View Loop off Summers Road just before 7 p.m. “I opened the basement door and I smelled smoke,” Deal said. The smoke alarms still weren’t going off, but when he went around to the back door of the house, he found a skid with paint thinners on it on fire, Deal said. “There were flames shooting plumb up over the top of the house,” Deal said. He couldn’t get to a hose to put the fire out because the fire started near water spigot, Deal said.
