The Charlotte Fire Department will be promoting an African American woman to the rank of engineer for the first time on Saturday.
Venessa Roy was hired as a firefighter on Sept. 21, 2009, and is currently assigned to Fire Station 28, located at 8031 Old Statesville Road.
"It's a blessing to see your hard work pay off and I can say that I'm excited to take on my new role as an engineer driver operator,” Roy said. “I am truly humbled by all the love and support that I have received from my family, friends, classmates and co-workers over the course of my 10-year career.”
Roy went through a competitive testing process for the rank of engineer before being promoted.
Roy is also the Camp Ignite director for the Charlotte Fire Department’s all girls camp, a free camp created to build courage and confidence in high school girls while introducing them to the fire service and other public service careers.
