It has been 18 years since the tranquility of a sunny Sept. 11, 2001 morning was shattered by terrorist airplane attacks in New York City and the nation’s capital in Washington.
Regional memorial services for those lost have become local tradition, with annual events set for Wednesday in Havelock, Fairfield Harbour, Craven Community College, the New Bern Firemen’s Museum, Kinston and Jacksonville.
Havelock Police Chief Marvin Williams said it is important for everyone to remember that terrible day in American history, especially young people.
Annunciation Catholic School, which is across the street from the Havelock memorial site, traditionally brings its students to ceremony.
“That is a big part for me, never forget, because the youngest victim of 9/11 was 3-years-old, younger than anyone of those students there,” said Williams.
