The Brunswick Fire Department wants to put a substation at Sunset Terrace, a project that when complete should result in a reduction of insurance premiums for a number of property owners in the area. The Whiteville Planning Board will hold a public hearing in virtual format Monday, Aug. 3, at 12:30 p.m. to decide on whether to recommend to city council that a conditional use permit be granted to allow a small fire station at 600 Sunset Terrace. Sunset Terrace is off Sunset Avenue, which turns near the Armory on Chadbourn Highway. The station will be sited near U.S. 74-76. Chief Greg Spivey said Friday that once the department gets the go-ahead from the city, the department expects about three months to pass between groundbreaking and building occupancy. After that, the State Department of Insurance will need to certify the substation, and only then will people see an insurance rate reduction.
