A man was killed in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday afternoon on Mathis Mill Road in the Clingman community, according to Trooper S.R. Hargrove of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Fred Elton Driver, 61, of Ronda, operator of a 1999 Dodge Durango sport/utility vehicle, died at the scene, Hargrove said.
Around 12:15 p.m., Driver was traveling east when he went off on the right, overcorrected, and went off on the left, the trooper said. The vehicle hit an embankment, overturned and hit a tree. Driver was ejected from the vehicle.
The wreck happened in the Ronda Fire District about a mile and a half west of the intersection of Mathis Mill Road and Clingman Road.
