Road construction in one eastern North Carolina town is creating long detours for drivers. The construction on Newport's Old Winberry Road has also led to delays for some fire departments and EMS agencies in the area. North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are replacing pipelines, and the closure is creating a 30-minute drive to get to the other side. EMT Lee Moore says he and his colleagues at the Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department, which is just a mile from Kofahl's house, now have to travel around 13 miles to respond to an emergency. “Our EMS side is going to be greatly affected," Moore explained. "Our EMS side will basically be cut in half, and response time for those on the other side of the cove that is being replaced, their response time is going to be pretty much doubled because Beaufort is going to have to respond to those.”
