VIDEO: First responders from all over the Triangle spent the weekend on the diamond for a good cause.
Nearly a dozen police, fire and EMS departments competed in the “Battle of the Badges” softball tournament at Ting Park in Holly Springs.
The groups set a goal of raising $10,000 for the North Carolina nonprofit “Shields and Stripes,” which connects first responders to in-person and remote mental health services.
Morrisville Fire Department engineer John Kauls says firefighters see many difficult things on the job so there’s a big need for mental health assistance.
“It’s always great to have people to talk to because it’s one of those things where a lot of us are prideful. We won’t talk about it,” Kauls said.
