The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department is putting the finishing touches on its new fire station serving people on the north and west end of town. Firefighters will start taking calls out of the new station in a couple of weeks. The facility includes a wellness room for blood pressure checks and giving out smoke detectors, a department history room and a decontamination building where firefighters will go immediately after a call to clean the fire engines and change their clothing, with the goal of not bringing carcinogens into their dorms or their homes. Fire chief Jim Jones says the new station was an important need because response times were longer than they’d like, especially at peak traffic times. “The town of Holly Springs, who runs mutual aid with us, actually answers a lot of calls on this end of our district just because of the travel time,” Jones said.
