Pinehurst Firefighters Train in Martial Arts

The Pinehurst Fire Department has a new training initiative aimed at enhancing firefighter and civilian safety: Jiu Jitsu. Partnering with Joe Dulmage of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Pineland and Sandhills Community College’s continuing education program, department members are working on learning the 36 fundamental skills incorporated in the Gracie Combatives Program. Police departments nationwide are increasingly training in jiu-jitsu, a self-defense technique comprising grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. Considering the frequency of firefighters being the first on the scene to a wide variety of call types, fire departments are also starting to get in the mix.
