A crash in Sarpy County killed four teenagers late Monday night, deputies confirmed.
Authorities said one teenager survived the crash and is in the hospital being treated for injuries. Deputies temporarily closed the intersection of 180th Street and Platteview Road around 11:30 p.m. Monday to investigate.
In a news release Tuesday, deputies said the teens were in a car that went off the road, hit the end of a guardrail and ended up in a ravine. Officials said the vehicle caught fire and was fully engulfed when crews arrived at the scene.
According to Springfield Fire Department Chief Chad Zimmerman, the incident appeared to be a routine call when things took a dark turn.
"We were towing out for a weed fire," Zimmerman said. "We were about a mile and a half or two miles away from the scene and they announced it was a car fire with parties possibly pinned."
Zimmerman and seven other firefighters were among the first to arrive just west of 180th and Platteview Road around 11:30 p.m. Monday night.
