Dawson County Emergency Manager Brian Woldt is gearing up for the 2019 severe weather season and held a presentation at the Wilson Public Library to inform the general public about severe weather and new wildfire detection methods. Woldt has been holding presentations like this in early spring for five years according to the Wilson Public Library. The National Weather Service – Hastings is the office which forecasts for the Dawson County area; Woldt said the Doppler radar which watches for their county warning area is located at Blue Hill. The next closest radar is NWS – North Platte, whose radar is located at Thedford. Woldt said because Dawson County lies in the middle of these two radars, meteorologists at the NWS cannot see into the lowest levels of the atmosphere like they can with locations closer to the radar. He said it is important for spotters and the general public to make weather reports so the “ground truth” about what is going on can be relayed back to the NWS.
