First responders train for emergency calls like the ones Sarpy County deputies and paramedics responded to Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
In these cases, Papillion firefighter and medic Marty Price said he and his fellow paramedics understand time is not on their side. "If you have an internal bleed on a child, you really are on the clock," Price said.
Papillion paramedics were among the first responders who arrived at the Gretna exit on I-80 Saturday. Price said medics have a checklist when trying to save patients like 4-month-old Amila Johnson.
"You're looking at the A-B-C's - airway, breathing, circulation. If you have a kid that has a bleeding injury, they don't have as much volume as an adult," Price said.
The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office said Johnson was in a secure car seat, when Adriana Rodriguez, 19, of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, crossed the center median driving a Chevy Cruze.
The Cruze collided with a minivan driven by Mary Lynch, 73, of Omaha, deputies said.
