House fire displaces Sidney police officer's family

A Sidney police officer is feeling lucky his family is safe and his entire home didn't burn down while he was at work Monday evening. Patrol officer Austin Smith responded to a fire in his own basement in Sidney The blaze caused damage to the entire basement and left behind smoke damage in the upstairs level. It remains under investigation. "I was just, obviously, worried nobody was in the house, but tried to stay professional," Smith said. The fire has forced Smith, his wife and their three kids from the home for at least four to six months. They're looking for a three-four bedroom home to rent in the meantime. The Sidney Police Department is also accepting monetary donations to help cover losses and expenses. Smith, a 2006 graduate from Sidney High School, has been with the department for nine years.
