Nassau County police helped to rescue a worker at the Covanta waste-to-energy plant in Garden City after they fell while working on the roof. According to police, officers responded to the plant at 600 Merchants Concourse at 10:45 a.m. on June 23. A 53-year-old man working on the roof fell through a hatch, police said, falling about 20 feet onto another tier of roofing. Emergency services responded, as did the Westbury Fire Department. The fire department was able to reach the man with a ladder truck and rescue basket. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious head trauma. A police medic suffered a minor injury during the rescue and was also taken to a hospital for treatment. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
