A ceremony was held Wednesday morning at the corner of Chapman Street and Court Street, to break ground at the future site of the Binghamton Fire Department's new headquarters. Mayor Richard David and Fire Chief Alan Gardiner spoke alongside Binghamton Fire officials and EMS personnel as they marked the beginning of construction for the state-of-the-art, $8.5 million dollar facility. The 20,000 square foot building will feature 5 bays, bunking for around 11 firefighters, a drive-thru, a kitchen and dining space, conference rooms, storage for medical supplies, and a decontamination room, as highlighted by the Mayor. The room will function as a way for firefighters to clean their equipment and remove any hazardous or toxic carcinogens they may have been exposed to while out in the field.
