A rapidly spreading fire destroyed a barn in Jamesport last night.
The fire at 1795 Main Road in Jamesport was reported at about 9 p.m.
Jamesport Fire Department Chief Duffy Griffiths, who was first on scene, said the structure was fully engulfed when he got there.
“The roof started collapsing within four minutes of my arrival,” Griffiths said in an interview this morning.
Jamesport firefighters, with the assistance of Mattituck and Riverhead fire departments got the blaze under control by about 11 p.m., Griffiths said.
The barn was unoccupied, the chief said. It had vehicles and equipment inside, he said.
“It was exterior operations only” because of the roof collapse, Griffiths said. “I immediately called Mattituck for its ladder truck so we could get water on the fire from above,” he said.
