An expanded Move Over Law is now in effect in New York. Under the law, signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in September, drivers in New York are now required to move over into a different lane if any vehicle is stopped along either shoulder of a road. If drivers can’t change lanes safely, they’re required to slow down to a reasonable speed. The expanded law took effect Wednesday, March 27. New York’s Move Over Law first went into effect in 2010 and required drivers to move over for stopped emergency vehicles. It was later expanded to include requirements to move over for construction and highway work vehicles, hazard vehicles and tow trucks. Now, drivers will have to move over if any vehicle at all is stopped in the shoulder, including passenger vehicles.
