Kya King Hernandez of Rosebud thought she was going to sleep in Thursday. She was 9 months pregnant and she was tired.
Her daughter, Leia Le’Shawn Hernandez, had other plans.
Jay Shults, training chief with the Rosebud Volunteer Fire Department, received the call about a woman in labor at 4:55 a.m. Shultz made it to the scene at 5:03 a.m. and the baby arrived 3 minutes later.
By the time Shults put on his gloves the baby’s head was showing.
“He caught the baby like a football,” Kya said.
Leia weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long.
This was Shults’ eighth baby to deliver. It was mom’s sixth child, and fourth daughter.
Leia is going to be welcomed into a big, happy family with an additional seven half-brothers and sisters, her mom said.
