VIDEO: A fire at an abandoned building in downtown Salt Lake City has closed a portion of 300 West as firefighters combat the blaze, authorities say. All northbound lanes from 600 North to 700 North are closed. While southbound lanes remain open, drivers are being asked to avoid the area altogether. The building is located on 646 N. 300 West, and firefighters engaged in defensive firefighting operations as smoke and flames reached the roof, the Salt Lake City Fire Department confirmed via Twitter. The blaze started at approximately 4 a.m., and crews are on scene to ensure the fire does not spread to any of the surrounding residences. Crews initially worried about whether a gas station located near the structure would be impacted. Fire officials say 300 West will be closed for some time due to both the flames and ice.
