VIDEO: Virginia Beach firefighters are joining the effort to Crush Cancer.
Did you know that firefighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service? 10 On Your Side has reported stories on local firefighters battling cancer and some losing that battle, which is all the more reason to join the fight to crush cancer.
For Max Gonano, local president of the Virginia Beach International Association of Fire Fighters, it’s really simple.
“It’s all about prevention. Right? And surveillance,” Gonano said. “So if we can prevent someone from getting cancer, that’s going to be job number one.”
Over the years, 10 On Your Side has profiled efforts by firefighters to bring attention to early detection of cancer, the number one way to crush cancer before it’s too late.

Details remain limited; however, around 5:43 a.m. on May 2, troopers were called to the fire on the southbound side. We’re told a tractor-trailer was carrying cat food.
Crews from Carroll County including the Hillsville Fire Department worked to extinguish the fire. Since then, all lanes on I-77 have been reopened and traffic is flowing in the area.

PHOTOS: Local firefighters gave egg-cited Chesterfield County fifth graders a chance to test their scientific knowledge on Wednesday, seeing how well the students could protect an egg when dropped from a fire truck’s ladder.
On Wednesday, May 1, fifth graders at Gordon Elementary handed their egg-protecting contraptions to firefighters to carry to the top of their truck’s ladder.
Dena Brown, a STEAM resource teacher at Gordon Elementary, told 8News that this activity was the result of the students’ long-term work on embryology and egg development.
“We’re learning about physics, gravity friction,” Brown said, in addition to how eggs are formed and how they develop.”
According to Brown, the students -- about 50 groups of two or three each -- had previously dropped eggs from the announcer’s stand by the football field.
