A Rivermont-area home was declared a total loss after a fire engulfed the house early Tuesday.
The Lynchburg Fire Department responded to 505 Jones St. at 3 a.m. for a reported structure fire, according to Battalion Chief Kenny Turner. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and a raging fire.
Crews were able to contain the blaze within 25 minutes of arriving on the scene. No one was injured in the fire.
The home, located near Rivermont Avenue between Cabell and D streets, was empty at the time of the blaze. The building’s only resident was out of town when the fire began, Turner said.
The inferno destroyed much of the two-story wood frame home, which was built in 1909, according to property records. The flames damaged an adjacent home and melted the passenger side of a parked car.
