The South Boston Fire Department on Broad Street was built in 1974. According to Fire Chief Steve Phillips, the building hasn't changed much since then, and space is tight. He gave ABC13 a tour of the tightly-packed truck bay.
There are six emergency response vehicles in the bay and they sit just a few feet apart from one another. Phillips said parking them all inside is a challenge.
"We keep this one parked in here sideways simply because we don't have the space to fit it,” Phillips said, pointing at a truck the department uses to fight brush fires.
The South Boston Fire Department also houses the county's ladder truck, which is the biggest vehicle in the bay. Phillips said the other trucks have increased in size over the years.
