Human remains were found Tuesday night following a house fire, according to Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler.
According to Sheriff Shuler, crews responded shortly after 8 p.m. to the 1700 block of St. Clairs Creek Road in Chilhowie. Firefighters found the remains of a person within the fire debris. The remains were sent to Roanoke for an autopsy.
The investigation remains ongoing at this time. Agencies assisting the Chilhowie Fire Department included the Adwolfe Fire Department and Saltville Fire Department. The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and the Chilhowie Police Department also responded.
