Good Samaritans help Jones County VFDs in barn fire

PHOTOS: Good Samaritans assisted Jones County volunteer firefighters responding to a fire on Saturday night. According to Jones County Fire Council Public Information Officer Dana Bumgardner, Johnson, Union, Ovett and Moselle volunteer fire departments responded to a structure fire at 2373 Highway 29 South shortly after 9 p.m. On arrival, firefighters found a metal barn, approximately 50 feet by 80 feet, filled with large bales of burning hay. The Fire Council said large hay bales are difficult to extinguish when burning, but the Good Samaritans assisted firefighters by using two tractors to slowly remove each bale of hay from the barn. The barn sustained significant structural damage during the incident, but no injuries were reported. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department was also on the scene.

Lamar, Marion County firefighters take part in vehicle extrication class

Thousands of car accidents happen across the country everyday. Fifteen firefighters took a vehicle extrication class Thursday and Saturday to prepare for many drivers’ biggest fear. Firefighters learned how to use tools like axes to break or cut their way in and get folks to safety. “It’s the first time some of them having even touched extrication tools,” said Lamar County Fire Coordinator Kyle Hill. “You have some who have, and they’ll be using some more advanced techniques in the class.” Hill said firefighters’ main goal is to always get people out quickly and safely, but that can be hard to do if the car is upside down. “That’s what they’re practicing today is a lot of different techniques,” Hill said. “Seeing a vehicle rolled over and then cutting the doors open, removing windshields. Basically, removing the car from around the victim.”
