West Philadelphia apartment building fire leaves more than 100 residents displaced


VIDEO: Over 100 residents have been displaced after a fire at an apartment building in West Philadelphia Sunday afternoon. At 4:38 p.m., police said they were called to an apartment building along the 4900 block Spruce Street for a report of people trapped in a fire. The fire took place at the Terrace Apartments at 4931 Spruce Street. The source of the fire was determined to have started in one of the apartments, according to the police. "Man, I’m just glad that they came here on time, got the people out," Maurice Merry, a resident at the building, said. "I smelled it, I told my wife ‘something ain’t right.' Then when I looked out the window and see down here, I seen a lot of smoke. I was just like ‘yo, everybody gotta relocate. Everybody gotta relocate.'"

Pittsburgh EMS expands pilot program for paramedics to utilize mobile blood banks


It didn’t look good for the teenage driver. Shortly after 7:15 a.m. on a rainy Thursday in May last year, the young man — who lost control of his yellow sports car when it hydroplaned on Saw Mill Run Boulevard and he slammed the vehicle into a utility pole near the Pittsburgh/Whitehall border. He was badly injured and losing blood as first responders and Duquesne Light workers struggled to free him from what was left of his car. Then, Pittsburgh paramedics — working alongside firefighters from Pittsburgh, Whitehall and Pleasant Hills — did something no ground-based EMS unit previously had done in Pennsylvania: they connected the driver to an IV and administered two to four units of whole blood right at the scene. EMS rushed the teen to an area hospital in critical condition — and he survived.

House fire in North Philadelphia leaves man dead, officials say


VIDEO: A man is dead after a fire destroyed a home in North Philadelphia on Friday afternoon, officials said. Firefighters were called to a home on the 2400 block of 17th Street and were able to get the fire under control. Officials confirmed that a 65-year-old man was killed in the fire. Skyforce10 was over the scene on Friday afternoon where firefighters could be seen entering a house. The windows of the house appeared to be destroyed by damage from the fire.

A dozen departments from three counties battle fire at Coolbaugh Township tire shop, apartments


VIDEO: A tire shop and apartments went up in flames in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County Friday. The damage was so bad that a dozen departments were called, and crews had to knock down the building. "It was a bad fire," said Alan Perrin, who lives nearby. "It was a mess." "With an automotive shop, we're talking about tires, oils, fuels," said Coolbaugh Twp. Fire Chief George Dobson. "That all adds to the fire alert." The smell of burnt rubber remained strong hours later. A dozen fire departments from Monroe, Wayne and Lackawanna counties were called to Coolbaugh Township just before 10 a.m. Friday. The fire on Route 611 was just down the road from the Pocono Mountain Intermediate School. "Very quickly confirmed the structure was compromised," said Dobson.

Multiple fire companies battle Limerick Township house fire


VIDEO: A two-alarm fire in Montgomery County sent two firefighters to the hospital Wednesday morning. First responders were called to the 200 block of Limerick Center Road in Limerick Township just before 11:30 a.m. Officials said the injuries appeared to be minor. The people inside the house and two dogs were able to make it out, but one cat is missing. Fire officials say they knocked out the fire quickly. They say warm days require firefighters to cool off before going back to fight the fire. "So, the firefighters, when they come out of the building, are automatically sent to rehab, blood pressure checked and temperature, things of that nature...especially the in the weather today, it's a little warmer out today. So, you may actually have overheat, heat exhaustion scenarios," said Limerick Fire Department Chief Ken Shuler.

House demolished, 2 people displaced after fire in York County


VIDEO: Firefighters battled a fire at a manufactured home in York County Wednesday morning. Crews responded to the 500 block of South Kralltown Road between Pine Woods Road and Myers Road in Washington Township at 8:15 a.m. The fire started in the basement and burned through the first floor of the home, according to the fire chief. There was a significant presence of fire crews at the scene. The fire went to two alarms before crews were able to get the fire under control. Two people, husband and wife, were displaced after living there for about 35 years. No one was injured, and everyone was able to evacuate the structure safely. The home is being demolished because of its unsafe structure. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.

Kutztown Fire Department getting ready for weekend parade


VIDEO: On Saturday, Kutztown Fire and Rescue is showing off some new sets of wheels in the way of new rescue and engine trucks. "The engine alone was custom built from start to finish that is 2000 gallons in a single axle," said Kutztown Fire Deputy Chief Joshua Young. They both have state-of-the-art safety features and better equipment. "We went with the rescue that had 750 gallons of water on it, where the old rescue truck had no water on it," said Young. It's a parade and homing, to officially dedicate the two new apparatus. But it's not just the brand-new ones they're showing off. A horse drawn tank from 1840 will make its way along the parade route too. Those are just a few of the trucks you'll see in the parade. "They can expect to see a multitude of apparatus," said Young. "So far, we have about 40 pieces of fire apparatus registered."

Two displaced after blaze in Lower Paxton Township


PHOTOS: Two people are displaced after a house fire early Wednesday morning in Lower Paxton Township, according to the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania. At 1:15 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a structure fire at a home on the 300 block of Deaven Road. Firefighters were on scene until 2:45 a.m. No injuries were reported, according to dispatch.
