Two-story building collapses after fire in Aiea


Honolulu Police, Honolulu Fire, and Emergency Medical Services responded to an early morning structure fire on Sunday in Aiea. Fire officials received the call around 2:18 a.m. before sending nine units with over 30 personnel to battle flames at the abandoned, two-story residential building near Center Drive and Tarawa Drive. According to HFD, the first unit arrived at the scene at 2:10 a.m. Reports said firefighters were able to secure a water supply and initiate a defensive fire attack from outside the building. HFD said the structure was fully involved in the fire. The combination of the flames’ intensity and the structure’s condition caused the building to collapse at 2:18 a.m., per HFD. Officials were able to control the flames by 2:38 a.m. and fully extinguished the fire at 5:18 a.m.

Hawaii fallen firefighter among those being honored May 4-5 in Maryland


The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 43rd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend (Memorial Weekend) on May 4-5, 2024, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year’s national tribute will honor 89 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2023 and 137 firefighters who died in previous years. The honorees will include the following Hawaii firefighter: Firefighter Tre’ Evans-Dumaran, age 24, of the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety, was swept into a storm drain by powerful floodwaters while assisting public safety employees in responding to flooded homes. He was dragged over 800 feet through the drain where it exited into the ocean. He was rescued by his crew, who immediately began resuscitation efforts.

One person displaced by Waihe’e structure fire


PHOTO: One resident was displaced by a structure fire in Waihe'e early Tuesday morning. The individual has been put in touch with the American Red Cross for immediate assistance. The fire was reported at 3:08 a.m. on April 23, 2024 at a utility building on Kahekili Highway. Crews arrived on scene to find the building fully involved with some extension to the surrounding brush. Hose lines were extended to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to other structures, according to department reports. The fire was brought under control at 4:28 a.m., and was extinguished by 5:22 a.m. Fire officials say no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire resulted in a total of $49,000 in damage to the structure and unknown damages to its contents.

Man, toddler seriously injured in moped crash in Ewa Beach


A man and a toddler are in serious condition after crashing while riding a moped on Keahumoa Parkway in Ewa Beach. The crash happened just before 5 p.m. in the 91-1100 block of Keahumoa Parkway. According to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the man -- said to be in his 20s or 30s -- and a 3-year-old boy were riding on the moped together when they lost control and hit a curb. Both the man and toddler were ejected, suffering serious injuries. They were both taken to an area emergency room, EMS said. Authorities have not identified the man or the child. Their relationship to one another has not been released.
