Honoring Wheeling’s bravest at annual public safety ceremony


VIDEO: On Thursday afternoon, the Wheeling Police and Fire departments hosted their annual public safety ceremony. The ceremony honored those who risked their lives to save others. Both the police and fire chiefs spoke and mentioned some of the difficult situations each of these men and women are put in daily. "You may not know it, but I can assure you the citizens don't grasp the magnitude of what the men and women of each our department do on a daily basis,” Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said. "We do this periodically to honor the men and women of our department for milestones we reach in our career and recognizing those instances where they've gone above and beyond to create a good outcome,” Fire Chief Jim Blazier said.

Free smoke alarm installation in Kanawha County during ‘Sound the Alarm’ program


Volunteers with the American Red Cross went door-to-door in Kanawha County communities where they offered to install new and free smoke alarms. It’s all part of the “Sound the Alarm” program. “We are installing free smoke alarms, going door-to-door and doing free fire escape planning and making sure that people know how to keep their home safer from the most common disaster that the American Red Cross responds to -- and that is that everyday home fires that we find ourselves responding to here in our own community and across the country,” said Erica Mani, Regional CEO within the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is in partnership with the Kanawha County Commission, city of Charleston, Charleston Fire Department and donors.

Firefighters battle fire that destroyed Huntington home


PHOTOS: Firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed a Huntington home Wednesday afternoon. Emergency dispatchers said a house on Adams Avenue caught fire about 3:30 p.m., temporarily shutting down a portion of the roadway. Dispatchers said the family was not at home when the fire started. No injuries have been reported. The West Virginia Fire Marshals Office is investigating, but firefighters said that the fire does not appear suspicious.

Mount Hope Fire Department announces the availability of oxygen masks for pets


VIDEO: For most of us, pets are members of our families. In an emergency, it is important for those going through a tragedy to help their animals, and that’s where the Mount Hope Fire Department is stepping up with their own plan. The firefighters said on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, that they have pet oxygen masks to make sure dogs and cats who survive house fires can be given oxygen right along with their humans. Low-cost spay-and-neuter clinic set to open in Mercer County One firefighter said he wants to be able to provide help to pets during housefires. “Any pets that’s inside, they get smoke inhalation, just like humans,” said MHFD Firefighter Austin Hamilton, who is also an emergency medical technician (EMT). “Our crews can provide oxygen for those animals after they’re removed from the structure.”
