Norfolk home sustains $100,000 worth of damages in fire


No cause has been determined in a house fire in Norfolk on Wednesday afternoon. Norfolk Fire Division said the call came in at 2:51 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to 2900 block of Cambridge Way for reported smoke in the basement. When they arrived, firefighters saw flames and smoke coming from inside and outside of the home. It took crews 10 minutes to locate and extinguish the fire. The property is valued at $500,000 and is estimated to have sustained $100,000 worth of damage to the structure and $20,000 to its contents. No firefighters or civilians were injured. Norfolk Fire Division was assisted by Norfolk Police, Black Hills Energy, Nebraska Public Power District, Hadar Fire, and Battle Creek Fire.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue clears suspicious package at south Lincoln apartment


A suspicious package at a south Lincoln apartment complex Wednesday afternoon has been cleared, according to Lincoln Fire and Rescue. LFR and the bomb squad were called to Old Cheney Place Apartments near 27th Street and Old Cheney Road around 1 p.m. A woman told a 10/11 reporter that she ordered three bridesmaids dresses which arrived in the mail Monday. However, she said when she opened the package it had the three dresses and a metal cylinder inside. The woman spoke with the company on Tuesday who said the metal cylinder didn’t come from them. She said the package weighed four pounds when it left the company’s facility but believes the package now weighed around 15 pounds. According to LFR, the bomb squad identified the suspicious item as a pump and cleared it as having no explosives. Authorities are still unsure how the item got into the package in the first place.

Multiple departments battle grass fire in Nemaha County


VIDEO/PHOTO: Firefighters were battling a grass fire that appears to have started south of Peru boat dock along the Missouri River. Nemaha firefighters were called for mutual aid at 2:18 p.m. Tuesday north of the boat dock road at Peru. There were three units dispatched using 732 Road and taking the Steamboat Trace Trail north. At 3 p.m. Auburn fire was called for mutual aid for a 646A Avenue residence for structure protection. Brock Julian Fire Department was called for mutual aid shortly after. Grass rigs and a tanker were also requested from Nebraska City.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue responds to garage fire


Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to a garage fire in north Lincoln Saturday night. Crews were called to the area of North 42nd and Cleveland Avenue at around 9 p.m. LFR said when crews arrived, the garage was fully engulfed and started to spread to other garages and outbuildings in the area. Firefighters were able to get water on the fire quickly, and had the fire under control within 15 minutes. LFR said the garage that initially caught fire is a total loss. According to LFR, the fire caused $100,000 in damage. No injuries were caused due to the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
