Ville Platte fire station hit with multiple bullets


VIDEO: In Ville Platte, police are investigating a shooting that happened Monday night resulting in a fire station being struck by bullets while firefighters were asleep inside. Authorities said this is not the first time the fire station has been shot at, in fact it’s happened multiple times. This fire station was struck by bullets in a shooting Monday night. Police told News 10 this isn’t the first time it’s happened, except this time two firefighters were inside. “There was a shooting that took place in the Gabriel Villa Apartment complex,” Sergeant Darrian Guillory with the Ville Platte Police Department said. Officers with the Villa Platte Police Department responded to calls about a shooting Monday night; it happened on Lincoln Road just after 10 p.m. Guillory said when officers got to the scene, they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound.

Pair escapes fire that destroyed Lafayette Parish mobile home; cat dies in flames


Two people were able to make it out of a mobile home that was destroyed by fire in Lafayette Parish but the owner's pet was not so fortunate. It happened on Cameron Street near Hollier Road in the Sadou area between Scott and Duson on Wednesday, April 24. Fire crews from Duson, Scott, and Judice responded to the fire just before 6:20 a.m. Duson Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Cormier said the homeowner reported burning logs in a fire pit Tuesday night and thought they were out. Neighbors noticed flames on the porch Wednesday morning and alerted the homeowner, who was able to safely escape with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, a cat died in the flames. Lafayette fire investigators are probing the cause but Deputy Chief Cormier added it's likely accidental. The mobile home is a total loss.

House fire in Baton Rouge leaves 3 displaced


VIDEO: Three people were displaced after a house fire in Baton Rouge early Wednesday morning. According to a spokeswoman with the St. George Fire Department, it happened in the 4800 block of Antioch Boulevard near George O’Neal Road and Monitor Avenue just after 4 a.m. The home is located in Shenandoah Estates. As of 8 a.m., crews were still on the scene. The Red Cross was called to help the three displaced residents. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the flames. The fire department said “traffic was a nightmare” in the area due to the location and the proximity to area schools. Officials asked residents to be patient as crews worked to clear the scene. No injuries were reported.

Westlake Fire Department receives $176K donation for new equipment


VIDEO: The Westlake Fire Department received a donation from one of SWLA’s biggest employers to help keep its community safe. Phillips 66 Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex is donating $176,000 for new equipment including new radios and defibrillators that will enhance communication and speed up response times during emergencies. Westlake Fire Chief Jonathan Duff said they have been trying to get this lifesaving equipment for a while, and having it now sets them apart from other stations. “This is top-notch equipment. This is gonna give our guys a position to be successful, the handoff with Acadian Ambulance is gonna be seamless, and it’s going to get people to the hospital and save more lives,” Duff said. Duff said these items can be costly, and he’s grateful for the donation.

Two-alarm fire displaces two people in Westwego, officials say


A two-alarm fire early Wednesday morning (April 24) displaced two people and left “several” cats dead inside the badly damaged home, Westwego fire officials said. The fire was reported at 2:21 a.m. at a single-story home at 1130 Avenue D. The Westwego Volunteer Fire Department arrived within four minutes and quickly sounded a second alarm, summoning additional manpower from the 7th and 8th Jefferson Parish Fire Districts. The contingent of 32 firefighters brought the blaze under control after 35 minutes. One adult and one child were displaced by the fire, but no injuries were reported. Westwego Fire Chief Ken Bouvier said “several cats were found deceased.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.
