PHOTO: More than 50 firefighters were on the scene of a fire and partial structure collapse near the 2800 block of Commerce Drive in Susquehanna Township on Wednesday morning, May 8.
According to crews on scene, the collapse happened as a result of the fire in the new Triple Crown Corporation building which was still under construction. Crews said the initial call came in shortly before 5:30 a.m. for a “lightning strike.” The cause is still under investigation.
According to Progress Fire Company Chief Michael Lawrence, no one was in the structure at the time. Chief Lawrence said one fire police officer sustained a minor injury when a vehicle drove over a fire hose while he was directing traffic. The officer is expected to be okay.

Members of Oakmont council have passed a new incentive in an effort to gain fire department volunteers.
Beginning in 2025, active members will receive a stipend of $65 per month. Borough manager Scot Fodi said that the stipend came after the state gave options for credits for active members in the form of real estate taxes and income tax.
He said they ran into obstacles with both options because of differences in living styles of volunteers in the department.
“Some of the volunteers rent and don’t own property, and some don’t work because they are still in school or retired,” Fodi said.
He said they ended up following a format used in North Huntingdon by giving active members the stipend.
“It’s a way of thanking them,” Fodi said of the firefighters.

Two people and their pets escaped a fire in a Luzerne County home early Wednesday.
Flames broke out around 3 a.m. along Main Road in Hanover Township. That's near Wilkes-Barre.
Two adults and three pets all made it out okay.
The Hanover Township fire chief told Newswatch 16 there was an orange sticker on the house when crews arrived, meaning the house was condemned. However, the status of the house right now is unclear.
The Red Cross has been called in to assist the victims.
It's too early to tell what sparked the flames.
The cause of that fire is under investigation in Luzerne County.
